Tooth Reshaping and Dental Contouring

What is tooth reshaping or dental contouring, and when is it needed?

Tooth reshaping is also called dental contouring, enamel shaping, and enameloplasty.  Cosmetic contouring of teeth is a fine adjustment to the shape of a tooth for a more beautiful smile, using mildly abrasive tools similar to those used in polishing.

How is tooth reshaping used in cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic contouring or tooth reshaping is the most common and economical technique used in cosmetic dentistry. This is the highly artistic part of making something that does not look quite right into a smile that is pleasing to the eye.  It is true artistry in dentistry.   Most often we are using tooth reshaping to change the silhouettes and reflections of teeth in order to improve the symmetry or to create the optical illusion that teeth look straighter than they really are.  The same sort of aesthetic techniques are used with veneers and crowns to get optimal cosmetic outcomes.  We love doing this kind of work, because our patients are so amazed that these simple modifications can dramatically improve their appearance.

Dental contouring

A step toward a beautiful smile.

A smile should have character. That is, it should appear natural and exhibit some natural unevenness.

For those with minor imperfections that need to be corrected, tooth reshaping can help to achieve a beautiful, natural smile.  Enamel shaping can even up the uneven edges of the front teeth or round off pointed tips for a pleasing and proportioned look.  Enamel shaping is just one of the many cosmetic dentistry tools that Dr. Pamela and Dr. Michael Adams can use to help you achieve a beautiful, natural, healthy smile that’s uniquely yours.

What are the advantages of dental contouring or enamel shaping?

Tooth reshaping is relatively inexpensive and varies depending on how much work is needed.  Insurance may cover some of the cost if the work is needed due to an accident.  There is little pain or discomfort.  Tooth reshaping may actually improve the health of your teeth by lowering risk of decay from excessive plaque.  Because reshaping may make teeth look straighter, it may be a substitute for braces in some cases.
